A Case Study in Effective Organizational Structure

THE CHALLENGE

After years of reacting to changes in funding and filling gaps as they emerged, Waypoint Services recognized a pattern: too many quick fixes, not enough time spent working on the organization. The leadership team and board saw an opportunity to step back and align their structure with the work ahead, especially as they looked toward the next 3–5 years of growth and impact.

THE INNOVATION WORKS® APPROACH

Waypoint Services partnered with The Innovation Lab for a customized one-day Innovation Works® session focused on organizational design. The session brought together leadership and board members to explore a question: What capabilities and roles do we need to succeed in the future we’re building?

During a series of ideation sessions, the team:

• Identified critical capabilities and roles needed to map an ideal organizational chart

• Prepared for implementation planning to ensure the transition is thoughtful, feasible, and resource-aligned

THE OUTCOME

The Innovation Works® process helped Waypoint Services make challenging decisions based on a clear understanding of the organization’s needs while creating a custom-designed organizational chart grounded in strategy. The new organizational chart serves as a guiding tool for informed hiring decisions, education, and development needs.
